Electric energy storage systems
What are the responsibilities of the Electrical Energy Storage Laboratory?
The Electrical Energy Storage Laboratory focuses on systems for storing electrical energy – primarily batteries – and their respective applications, such as electric vehicles, home storage systems, e-bikes, etc.
The focus is on battery system technology – in other words, everything involved in turning battery cells into a fully functional system. This includes, in particular:
- Battery characterisation
- Modelling and simulation
- Battery management
- Battery electronics
Laboratory facilities:
The equipment in the Electrical Energy Storage Laboratory is used for both teaching and Applied Research.
Fully automated test benches and temperature chambers equipped with safety devices are available for the testing and characterisation of battery cells and battery modules.
Test chambers
- 5 chambers for temperature control of battery cells and modules
- -40 °C to +180 °C
- Protected area, exhaust air and gas detection
Cell & module test benches
• Cell tester
- Scienlab, 24 channels, 6 V / 30 A
- BasyTec, 64 channels, 5 V / 5 A
- BatteryDynamics, 16 channels, 6V / 10A
• Module tests
- Scienlab, 6 channels, 80 V/100 A, can be connected in parallel up to >= 600 A
- CAN integration, data logger
• Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
- Gamry Reference 3000AE
- Gamry Reference 5000P (6x)
- Zahner Zennium Pro
• Bidirectional electronic power supplies
- 1,500 V / 15 kW & 750 V / 30 kW
- 80 V / 10 kW & 80 V / 5 kW
In addition, there are project-specific test set-ups for battery storage systems using lithium-ion and vanadium redox flow technology.
Internships, research projects and student projects in the laboratory
As part of the ‘Energy Storage’ and ‘Batteries and Fuel Cells’ modules, practical experiments are carried out in the laboratories.
Information on research projects can be found on the website of the Institute for Sustainable Energy Systems: Electrical Energy Storage

You can find opportunities relating to final-year projects and coursework on the ISES website: get involved or get in touch with us.
Where is the laboratory located?
The following rooms form part of the laboratory:
• E0202: Battery laboratory (test benches)
• E0204: Internships and preparation for experiments
The following laboratories are shared with other departments:
• B0172: ISES Project Laboratory (project-specific research facilities)
• R3.102: Student workstations and laboratory set-ups (ISES)
