High-Voltage Laboratory
What are the responsibilities of the high-voltage laboratory?
The high-voltage laboratory is primarily used to run internships for students. Using high voltages of up to 300 kV, properties such as the dielectric strength of various electrode configurations are determined, and test specimens, such as high-voltage insulators, are tested. In addition, specialised tests can also be carried out for companies.
Laboratory facilities:
- AC voltages up to 300 kV
- DC voltages up to 280 kV
- Transient voltages up to 800 kV
Laboratory projects (past and present):
- Development of a high-voltage, high-current feed-through for solar silicon reactors
- Investigation into the cause of a fire in a transformer building following water ingress
- Surge voltage tests on transformers for an airport’s runway lighting system
- Stress tests on contact components for computerised tomography scanners
- Lightning strike tests on lightning protection systems for wind turbine rotor blades
Where is the laboratory located?
In the basement of the E Building, room E 0104a
