For your information
In 2000, our master's degree programme in Electrical Engineering was approved – one of the very first to be offered. It was not until August 2002 that the transition to the Bologna Process became official in Germany following an amendment to the Framework Act on Higher Education.
A
Our aim is not merely to impart knowledge to you, but to train you to become leading experts in your field. This is evidenced by our accreditation – a process that is firmly enshrined in the Bavarian Act on Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
Our bachelor's degree and master's programmes have been assessed by ASIIN, an external and independent body, and awarded a quality seal. This rigorous process involves detailed on-site evaluations by subject experts and in-depth dialogue between teams of assessors and all levels of our university community – from programme directors right through to the students themselves. The award of the seal is based on recognised, learning-outcome-oriented subject standards in line with the European Qualifications Framework and the European Standards and Guidelines.
Accreditation confirms that a degree programme meets the requirements of academic research and professional practice in the relevant disciplines to a high standard. This gives prospective and current students the assurance that they will receive an academic education of recognised quality at our university.
The degree programme is only accredited until dd.mm.yyyy – what happens after this date?
Accreditations are, as a rule, always time-limited. The department will ensure that re-accreditation is sought in good time. Students are not affected by this; for them, the degree programme continues uninterrupted.
Which academic achievements can be used for academic credit transfer?
In principle, all academic achievements and examination results, or non-university achievements, can be used for academic credit transfer, provided they are at Master’s level and amount to at least 5 ECTS credits. A maximum of 5 ECTS credits may be transferred per module.
How can I have my academic achievements transferred?
Academic credit transfer requires official documentation, including ECTS credits and marks. An application form
is available on PRIMUSS. Further information can be found on the university website
.
What do I need to do if I have a foreign qualification?
Foreign qualifications must be certified by uni-assist (Section 2(1)(3) of the Study Programme Regulations).
B
We distinguish between the following:
the application (online, with documents uploaded), one semester before the start of your studies;
admission (the written notice is issued and sent by the Enrolment Office); and
enrolment (enrolment at the start of your studies).
When can I apply?
The application periods are set centrally by the university; you can find the relevant information on the university’s website
.
D
What language skills do I need to demonstrate?
At least a B2 level of proficiency in German. The manner in which this can be demonstrated is set out in Section 2(1)(3) of the SPO. Many degree programmes in Germany require C1. This is not the case for our degree programme.

What is the aptitude assessment procedure all about?
The aptitude assessment procedure takes the form of an interview. Its purpose is to assess whether applicants meet the specific entry requirements for this master's degree programme. The interview focuses on key competencies and subject-specific fundamentals in the field of electrical engineering (Section 2(2) of the Study Regulations).
You will be invited to the interview by email once your application documents have been reviewed.
Do I have to take part in the aptitude assessment?
The aptitude assessment is waived if you have a current overall grade point average of 2.2 or higher and have completed at least 120 ECTS in STEM modules (Section 2(1)(2) of the Study Regulations). The overview of marks at the time of application is decisive.
Can I retake the aptitude assessment?
In the event of rejection, the application may be resubmitted on one further occasion at the latest.
When and where does the interview take place?
- When: Usually around four weeks after the application deadline
- Where: Generally in person in a room on the Lothstraße Campus
- Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
- You will find the venue and time in the invitation letter
Does a second application
require a second admissions process?
Once you have successfully passed our interview, you do not need to go through it again. The admission letter serves as proof that you have successfully passed the interview. This can simply be uploaded along with the other documents for any future applications.
For each subsequent application, all admission requirements must be met and all supporting documents must be uploaded again. Old documents are deleted once the application deadline has passed.
How do I upload my previous admission letter?
Under ‘Application overview’ in the ‘Upload documents’ section, you can upload the admission letter as the second document, alongside your current overview of marks.
Alternatively, you can attach the letter as a PDF to another of your PDF documents (using a suitable PDF tool) and upload the combined document.
F
Course selection takes place online around the start of the semester. Places are limited for many modules. The registration system ensures that the modules on offer are filled evenly.
An HM account is required to take part. You will be issued with one as part of the enrolment process. You can access the course selection page (during the selection period) via your personal PRIMUSS page: Services > Course Selection/Enrolment. You can also change your selection at any time up until the end of the selection period.

What are the requirements for enrolment?
To enrol, you must provide your admission letter and proof that you have successfully completed your degree programme. (Section 2(1) of the Study Regulations). For foreign qualifications, proof of German language proficiency at level B2 or higher is required.
If fewer than 210 ECTS credits have been attained, the missing ECTS credits must be made up within the first 12 months of commencing your studies. Details are determined by the examination board (§ 4 SPO).
When does enrolment take place?
The enrolment period begins approximately two weeks before the start of the semester and lasts around four weeks. You do not necessarily have to be enrolled on the first day; you still have a few days to do so. The exact closing date can be found in the admission letter.
What else needs to be done once you have received your admission letter?
- If your bachelor's degree certificate is available by the time of enrolment: you may enrol.
- If your Bachelor’s thesis has been graded by the end of the semester but the degree certificate is still missing: enrolment is still possible even after the start of the semester.
- If the final assignment has not yet been graded by the end of the semester: you must undergo re-registration for the bachelor's degree programme. Only once you are enrolled can the grade for your final assignment be recorded. Provided the degree certificate is available by the end of the enrolment period, you can deregister from the bachelor's degree programme and enrol in the master's degree programme.
What should you do if your Bachelor’s degree certificate is not available by the time of final enrolment?
In this case, you cannot enrol.

What does the elective module ‘Applied Research Project I + II’ involve?
The Applied Research Project enables you to put the abilities you have acquired in theoretical subjects into practice through innovative research projects in the department’s laboratories.
You can find current topics on the department website. The project is subject to academic credit transfer as an elective module worth 5 ECTS. If you are interested, it is possible to undertake more extensive projects and have them recognised as a further elective module (Applied Research Project I and Applied Research Project II, totalling 10 ECTS). Further information is available from the respective Professors supervising the projects. Registration is not carried out via PRIMUSS, but using “Appendix C: Course Registration Form” from the Master’s EI course timetable.

If online examination registration is not possible for technical or other reasons beyond the students’ control, registration must be made in writing, specifying the subjects/modules and the registration code number, no later than one working day after the end of the registration period, at the Examination and Internship Office
.
Can I register for examinations after the registration period has ended?
Late exam registrations require a written application stating the reasons. Only reasons beyond the students’ control will be accepted (e.g. illness; proof required, e.g. a doctor’s certificate). The request must be submitted in person to the chair of the examination board no later than 14 days after the end of the regular registration period. Requests submitted after this deadline cannot be accepted.
Can I still amend my examination registration at a later date?
The rules for late registrations also apply to changes of examiner or other subsequent amendments to the original examination registration.

Are there any differences between full-time and part-time study?
From the university’s point of view, there are no disadvantages to studying part-time. However, it may have implications for social security and your employer (problems with recognition as a working student). If you study part-time, you are not obliged to take the full six semesters – studying at a faster pace is permitted and possible. In extreme cases, you can graduate in three semesters despite studying part-time, effectively studying as if you were full-time.
The decision to study part-time or full-time must be made before enrolment. It is not possible to change this decision later on.

In addition to our extensive range of modules
(see the FAQ on ‘Choosing modules’), you are welcome to propose other modules that are of interest and benefit to you – including those from other departments and higher education institutions both in Germany and abroad.
How can I choose a module from another department or higher education institution?
The answer does not lie with us, but depends entirely on the rules and practices of the other institutions. This is where your own initiative is required.
For recognition, you simply need an ‘official’ Transcript of Records showing the mark, the ECTS credits, the name of the course and the master's degree level (EQF 7).
Places are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. If someone changes their choice at a later date, places may well become available again. It is therefore worth checking back later.

What admission requirements must I meet?
To apply for the master's degree programme, you must have a current proven grade point average of 2.8 or higher, with at least 170 ECTS credits. A bachelor's degree is not required for the application (Section 2(2) of the Study Regulations).
Further requirements apply for enrolment at the start of the programme, which are explained in the FAQs under ‘Enrolment phase’.
I studied xxx at yyy University. Can I still make an application for the programme?
In principle, yes. The programme must comprise at least 180 ECTS credits. When applying, you must provide evidence that, by the end of your studies, you have earned at least 90 ECTS from STEM modules (Section 1(1) of the Study Regulations). If you have earned at least 120 ECTS from STEM modules (and have a grade point average of 2.2 or better), you will be exempt from the aptitude assessment procedure (interview).
